Banned from SIDs

Peddlers in Jersey City will have a tough time hawking their wares because the City Council has adopted an ordinance that would ban these sidewalk sellers from the city's for Special Improvement Districts.

These SIDs are in Journal Square, Central Avenue, Historic Downtown and Newark Avenue, and McGinley Square. They are the city's major commercial areas. This pretty much puts the those selling costume jewelry, knockoff watches and women's accessories and bootleg CDs and DVDs out of business - or does it?

Peddlers, panhandlers and others pretty much operate freely without much police harassment. Quality of life issues are not a big priority for police because of a rising concern of violent crime. The anti-peddler law is going on the books, but does it really have any teeth?
